Conceptualized by a team of architects, artists, and engineers, the sculptural Y-shaped bridge piers that support the MetroLink trail bed in its graceful course across uneven terrain are functional design at its best.

At the outset, the team’s challenge was to design a system of bridges.  Early design called for a standard post-and-lintel bridge, but, in rethinking, the team concluded that a distinctive bridge could be designed that also conformed to strict earthquake guidelines and safety regulations.

Collaborating with architects and engineers, the artists designed the unique arched supports that reflect an inverted version of the arch motif used throughout the MetroLink system design.  The bridge pier system is a signature of MetroLink design and appears in the subsequent St. Clair and Cross County alignments.
