As Director of AIT, David Allen oversees the successful integration of artwork into all of Metro's capital construction projects including Cross County MetroLink stations, bus stops and transfer centers, park-ride facilities, and community-based activities such as Metro’s bus painting programs.
Prior to joining Metro, Allen was the manager of the Hiawatha Art & Design Program for the Minneapolis Metro Transit System. In this capacity, he managed a $2.5 million art program for seventeen light rail stations with twenty-two artists. Allen administered design, fabrication, and installation contracts for the project ranging from $15,000 to $350,000. In addition, he was responsible for developing policies and procedures for selecting designers and artists for the Hiawatha project, and reviewing schematic and final design proposals.
Allen has over 20 years of experience in administering public art programs and providing consulting services for transportation industries, exhibitions, and installation of contemporary works of art.
From the early 80’s to 2000, Allen provided leadership for the City of San Jose’s Public Art Program including the San Jose Arts Commission and the City’s Arts Grants program. He oversaw the selection, commissioning, and maintenance activities of all artwork commissioned through the program.
