Construction of the Cross County MetroLink Extension began in the spring of 2003 and was funded 100% locally from the Proposition M sales tax passed in both St. Louis City and St. Louis County in August of 1994. The Cross County Extension adds 8 miles to the existing rail system, which currently spans 38 miles from Shiloh, Illinois (at Scott Air Force Base) to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.

In keeping with our mission to draw positive attention to and to improve the Metro transit environment, AIT issued a call seeking 2D public art proposals. The project was open to artists within 100 miles of St. Louis.
Selections on the project were made by a panel of artists, arts professionals, and a member of the AIT Advisory Council. Selections were based on visual and conceptual excellence and the ability to impact Metro riders and the general public in a positive fashion.
AIT received more than 95 proposals, making it very difficult for us to narrow it down to a select few. The artists selected are: Jon Cournoyer, Deanna Dikeman, DB Dowd, Cary Horton, August Jennewein, and Susan Pittman.
